GAIN -BENIN IS RAISING THE POPULATION OF HEKANDJI (TORI) TO WATER, HYGIENE AND SANITATION

GAIN-Benin raise awareness on hygiene and sanitation

By Theodore ANAGONOU

One of the specific objectives of GAIN (Global Aid Network) is to improve family and community health. In order to achieve this objective, GAIN-Benin, after having provided drinking water to the populations of Hêkandji (Tori), proceeded this Tuesday, October 26, to sensitization to water, hygiene and sanitation. This is GAIN-Benin's way of supporting the government in its fight against covid-19 where barrier gestures are neglected.

“Every child we teach is a man we win. » GAIN-Benin, having understood the strong message conveyed by this thought of Victor Hugo, saw fit to bring together schoolchildren, schoolgirls, teachers and parents of pupils of the Hêkandji public primary school in the town of Tori this Tuesday in order to teach them the notions of hygiene and sanitation. This training in water, hygiene and sanitation is part of the activities of GAIN-Benin. Indeed, GAIN-Benin has carried out a well drilling, equipped with Hêkandji EPP pumps. In this context, GAIN organized this training to allow this community to integrate hygiene into their daily lives in order to live in a healthy environment and stay away from diseases. At this stage, it should be noted that hygiene and sanitation promotion aim to demonstrate the importance for public health of living in a healthy environment by providing knowledge on the correlation between disease transmission and hygiene. personal and environmental. Simply washing your hands with water at critical times reduces diarrheal disease by over 40%! During this period when the corona is rife all over the world by leading many people to death, and that barrier gestures are increasingly neglected at the level of the population, the GAIN-Benin through this training brings its stone to the building by raising awareness and exhorting its targets to observe barrier gestures.

Why this training in a school?

For GAIN, bringing together schoolchildren and teachers to give them these notions of hygiene and sanitation is very important. The school, in fact, has an important place in the awareness strategy. Because it occupies a central place in the community: after the family, it is the most important place of learning for children. Schools are also good places for the development and transmission of disease. On the other hand, childhood is a key moment for learning certain hygienic behaviors; what they remember is likely to be applied in the rest of their lives, and is a kind of guarantee of the sustainability of the effects of the program. All the participatory activities developed help on the one hand to identify existing good practices and also encourage community members to decide on new practices to adopt. The objective is to improve the resilience capacity of populations vis-à-vis health risks.

Note that GAIN is an international Christian organization under Canadian law established in Benin since 2004, whose mission is to: "Demonstrate the love of God in Word and in deed to suffering and destitute people around the world through projects. humanitarian aid and development. "
